How the New Star Trek Fan Film Guidelines May Change Fandom

I’ve heard about this story before, about fans wanting to create their own Star Trek movie only for the companies that own the rights to Star Trek threatening to sue. The companies are scared that if anyone can simply alter the characters and plots, then they can freely use what was originally licensed and copyrighted. However, the reason that the fans want their own movie is because of their devoted loyalty and love of the Star Trek universe. They don’t want to steal Star Trek, they want to create Star Trek. After all, who is the reason that stories continue to be known? Is it the licensed owners of the stories or the dedicated fans that keep asking for more? The irony is that the fans are more dedicated to Star Trek that the people who control it. Now the fans want more say in something they love.
